Avodart Review

Avodart is used to shrink an enlarged prostate in men with a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia. It works by lowering amounts of the hormone responsible for prostate growth (dihydrotestosterone). Avodart reduces urinary blockage and improves urine flow.

Avodart - How it Works

Avodart works by lowering the amount of the male hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), leading to shrinkage of the enlarged prostate in most men. Just as it took your prostate time to grow, it also takes time for your prostate to shrink.

Avodart can begin shrinking the prostate in as early as one month and has been shown to maintain reduction of prostate size out to 4 years in clinical studies. If your prostate is smaller, it will put less pressure on your urethra.

Avodart has been shown to improve symptoms after 3 to 6 months, with continued improvement out to 2 years; improvement was maintained out to 4 years. When Avodart shrinks the prostate, it stops the symptoms associated with Enlarging Prostate from getting worse. Studies have shown that treatment with Avodart for 2 years lowers the chance of acute urinary retention (AUR) and the risk of needing prostate surgery. Most other medicines that treat the prostate do not reduce your risks of developing AUR or needing prostate surgery.

Avodart - How to Take

Take Avodart by mouth once daily, with or without food. Swallow the medication whole. Use Avodart regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it at the same time each day. It may take 3 to 6 months before you notice an improvement of your symptoms.

Avodart - Possible Side Effects

Sexual problems (e.g., impotence, decreased interest in sex, decrease in the amount of ejaculate) may infrequently occur, but then go away as your body adjusts to the drug.
